Product GIF sizes for Amazon, Shopify, Etsy, and email
A GIF and a product video are not the same upload. Shopify and Etsy want a video file in the product gallery. Amazon’s shoppable video is a longer format. Email is the place a GIF still earns its keep, and mailbox limits are not one number. The figures below are from each company’s public help pages. Check the upload screen before you export a batch, because these pages change.
Shopify
Shopify’s product media help says an uploaded product video can be up to 10 minutes, up to 1 GB, and up to 4K (4096 × 2160). Accepted types are .mp4, .mov, and .webm. Shopify converts what you upload and serves MP4 or HLS. The files help page adds a minimum length of 0.25 seconds, a minimum of 100 pixels on a side, a maximum of 4096 pixels, and a maximum of 120 frames per second. Recommended aspect ratios include 16:9, 9:16, 4:3, 3:4, and 1:1. A 3 or 5 second MP4 fits the length rules. A GIF does not take the place of that video file.
Etsy
Etsy’s listing-video article says you can add up to two videos, up to 100 MB each, in MP4, MOV, FLV, AAC, AVI, 3GP, or MPEG. It says the video may be 3–15 seconds, at least 500 pixels, ideally 1080 or more, and no wider than 2:1 or taller than 1:2. Etsy removes the audio. The separate “create a listing” article says videos are 5–15 seconds. Both pages are official and they do not match on the minimum. A 5 second file satisfies the stricter sentence. A 3 second file matches only the video article. Square and 4:5 sit inside the 2:1 to 1:2 range.
Amazon
Amazon’s sell.amazon.com article on product video describes shoppable videos uploaded from Seller Central as .mov or .mp4, up to 1080p, up to 5 GB, and between 1 and 12 minutes. It says those videos show in the main media block when the listing has fewer than six images, after review. That minimum length is about a minute, not a five-second loop. A short Motionframe MP4 can still be a social clip or a piece inside a longer edit. It is not, on these published rules, a complete shoppable video by itself. Sponsored Brands and A+ videos have their own specs. This page does not mix them in.
There is no single mailbox standard for a product GIF. Some clients block animation, and very large files get clipped or dropped. Keep the GIF small enough to attach or embed without making the message heavy, and send the MP4 or a hosted link when the message is going to a client that does not play GIFs. Motionframe’s GIF is a reduced copy of the video for that reason. The MP4 is the file to upload to Shopify or Etsy.
Questions
Should I upload the GIF to Shopify?
Upload the MP4 as product media. Shopify’s help page lists video file types, not a GIF, for that slot. Use the GIF in email or in a place that asks for an image.
Is 3 seconds enough for Etsy?
One Etsy help page says 3–15 seconds. Another says 5–15. Export 5 seconds if you want to satisfy both sentences.
Can a 5 second clip be my Amazon product video?
Amazon’s shoppable video article says length is 1 to 12 minutes. A 5 second loop does not meet that published minimum.
What frame should I pick?
1:1 is the usual catalog square. 4:5 is a taller shop grid. 9:16 is the vertical frame. Crop the photo to that shape before you animate it.
